It usually takes just one look to notice a place has something special. Almonaster La Real in the Sierra de Aracena in Spain is such a place. The village has an old mosque on top of a rock overlooking the whole area. Almonaster La Real is a 1,5 hour drive away from Seville in Andalusia and is a good starting point to explore the area by foot over well marked trails.

An alternative entrance into the village of Almonaster La Real is through the make-shift parking lot on the east side – this is where local bus companies park their vehicles.

An unmarked path goes down towards an pathway and bridge called the La Teneria. It’s part of a roman road towards Pax Julia (the roman name for Beja in Portugal). Across the bridge it’s a steep walk into the village center with on the left the old mosque.

The view from the mosque is quite nice and overlooks the local bull ring.

No less attractive is strolling through the streets of Almonaster La Real and visit the shops for locals and tourists. The local pharmacy sits in a very nice building.
Walking trails in the Sierra de Aracena
Sierra de Aracena has quite a few marked walking trails, short as well as long for hikes lasting several days.

Escalada - recreational area near Almonaster La Real
Popular with locals in the area is Escalada, a forested area with a water tap, barbeques and a public toilet all maintained by the municipality of Almonaster La Real. Nearby is a small stream.
