Mobile Aircon, Air Conditioner for a Mercedes Benz 4x4 1017A |
Saturday, 14 June 2008 |
After experiencing the scorching heat of Oman in March & April 2008 we felt that aircon (air-conditioner) in this region is definitely no luxury. As we heard from so many others – staying in the UAE or Oman without air-conditioner during summer time is close to unbearable and specially when living in a truck. And we only felt the heat in the springtime with so far relatively low humidity. So staying on the Arabian Peninsula during summer makes Air Conditioning a must have. Just like a heater is during winter time in Europe. But air conditioner installation isn’t an easy job in our case – the OM352 6 cylinder engine is not prepared for such modifications. But if there’s a region with a lot of air conditioner experience, it must be the Arabian Peninsula. So we searched and found an A/C fitter in Dubai for heavy trucks and special equipment – and for those who are thinking about air-conditioner installation too – read on – it’s a long story with quite a few technical details. |

On 13 march 2008 we've gone through all pet import paperwork and procedures to import Indra – our white Canadian Sheppard – from the UAE into Oman. On this day we crossed the border into Oman at the Hatta border post (Al Wajajah). It was a hot day already and being at the border with any missing per import paperwork would have made the border crossing an even longer story for sure.

Wednesday, 09 April 2008 |
After nearly 60 days in the UAE we left for Muscat crossing the Al Wajajah border (Hatta) closest to Dubai. Temperatures were already on the rise and visiting Oman is definitely is a must see on the Arabian continent. Here you find a few bits and pieces about entering Oman with a foreign (non-UAE) vehicle. Although there are more difficult borders to cross, it’s still worth mentioning.

The UAE - first impressions |
Sunday, 24 February 2008 |
Five weeks after our arrival in Port Khalid – Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates we settled down for a bit in the beach area’s in Dubai and Sharjah. Life here stands in sharp contrast to what we’ve experienced in Iran, Pakistan and India. It feels a bit like strange birds having arrived in a region far outside the normal migration routes. Nearly every tourist / traveller / foreigner arrives here by plane, stays in hotels and fits the designed visitor mould perfectly. We stay overnight in our truck on parking lots, beaches and shop with the locals in Carrefour and Geant hypermarkets. But the backdrop of life here has many interesting similarities with India and Pakistan.
