Location
The first Alentejo Tourism Congress in Portugal, has started on the 26th of March 2010, in the city of Beja in the heart of the Alentejo. Organized by Turismo do Alentejo, the Congress, has 850 registered participants with 35 speakers spread over six panels. The congress runs until Saturday, the 27th, in the Municipality Theatre Pax Julia.
The congress aims to affirm the Alentejo as a tourist destination with 2009 as the best ever year for tourism in terms of overnight stays.
Alentejo is a south-central region of Portugal. Its name's origin, "Além-Tejo", literally translates to "Beyond the Tagus" or "Across the Tagus". The region is separated from the rest of Portugal by the Tagus river, and extends to the south where it borders the Algarve.

On Friday afternoon a panel discussed tourism developments for the new civil airport near Beja, the Beja International Airport, which is expected to be opened in September 2010.
