In the former DDR region near Berlin – Germany, the ruins of a hospital dating back to 1898 hides in the woods. It’s called Beelitz – Heilstätten, a former sanatorium with a tattered history. Have a look at this remarkable place.

Founded in the 1898 to treat tuberculosis - the Beelitz - Heilstatten sanatorium was very successful and grew into a large hospital center in early 20th century. The institute ran into financial problems just before the 2nd world war. During the war it became a military hospital to treat German soldiers.

19th century hospital ruins - since 1994 falling in decay

After WWII the Soviets sealed off Beelitz Heilstatten into a restricted area - again it became a military hospital which existed up-to 1994.

Parkinson recura clinic in Beelitz Germany

Since 1996 a few buildings in the historic area of Beelitzt-Heilstätten are restored to their original 19th century glory. Such as the Recura Neurological Rehabilitation clinic – a massive building meticulously renovated with great detail. The modern clinic opened its doors in 2008 with state of the art equipment and know-how for those with for instance Parkinson’s disease.

For those wanting to stay in the area while family or friends are treated at the Recura Neurological Rehabilitation clinic there’s a Hotel nearby – called Land Hotel Gustav. The building was part of the 19th century clinic and since 1998 renovated to become a Hotel with a very nice ambiance.

Beelitz Heilstätten tours in hospital ruins

When the soviets left the hospital buildings at Beelitz Heilstatten it was an open area – much under pressure by looting and destruction. Nowadays large parts are sealed to prevent further decay and also accidents. In the past years several people have been badly injured while wandering in the open buildings – at night.
