It’s a somewhat bewildering but absolutely unique experience, the makeshift open-air barbecue food-stalls at Djemaa-el-Fna square in Marrakech. Every evening a part of the large central square is turned into one big barbecue frenzy. An absolute must see.

Marrakech make shift barbecue party at the central square.

Every evening a part of the Djemaa-el-Fna square in Marrakech is tuned into a makeshift barbecue party round sunset. A large number of food-stalls are wheeled in on the square and start selling freshly chopped, barbecued vegetables, meat and fish on the spot. The bright lights from the food stalls create a surreal smoky effect.

Each foodstall has several “schlagerfestival” style tables with 2 or 3 guys in charge to get the tables filled with customers. It’s impossible to get past without them being totally in your face trying to convince you to have a seat.

Food looks quite fresh and prepared on the spot - served quickly in small amounts.

The Barbecue party is not meant as a tourist thing in the first place, it’s been there at the central square for a long time.

Orange juice sellers in their horse carriages

And if that’s not enough the orange juice sellers in their horse carriages are there to serve you that freshly pressed orange juice for just 3 Dirham (27 eurocent, 35 dollarcent) a glass.

Caution about the Six (6) and Sixty (60) trick Dirham. Don't touch your orange juice glass till you have paid 6 Dirham for 2 glasses.  Some orange juice sellers suddenly price their produce at 60 Dirham once they see you drink their juice before having paid.
