162 Days in the East
Legal

Legal stuff......It took us a great deal of time just to track our legal situation for such a trip, not to talk about the process of filling a few legal holes. Below a few things we took care of.

Being away for 6 months brings a wide range of legal issues to surface related to all sorts of contracts in our daily live.
Generally being away for 6 months seems to have two legal sides; contracts we want to get rid off seem to stick and contracts with benefits we want to keep suddenly collapse. Our destination, the time span and how we get there are the main factors.

Well, a few examples; Our insurance covering furniture and stuff deteriorates to one with limited coverage after 90 days of being abroad. Our legal assistance insurance coverage simply stops when we set foot in a foreign country. After leaving Europe by car, standard road assistance is nonexistent. Third-party car insurance (green-card) has European scope (except for Israel). Our (current) travel insurance stops after 3 months and so on and on.

And worst of all many insurance's cover the same 'risk' area. The 'assistance' part really sticks out, next is coverage for all sorts of accidents like theft, loosing things,

So what did we do to fill those legal holes ? In general extend the timespan of a few insurance's;

  • Travel insurance (The base insurance for our trip)
  • Legal assistance insurance
  • Mountainering insurance (Covers 'dangerous' activities like mountainering)
  • Health insurance (Just fitted the standard coverage, phew !)

And extra insurance for (to be bought at the border or for instance at Colonia)

  • Third party car insurance (Obligatory when entering some Middle-East countries)

We quickly learned that having a solicitor back home makes things a lot more easier. Having someone back home to handle our financial situation, answer important letters and so on.
