The Journey has started
Thursday, 04 May 2006
We have left our winter camp in the Netherlands. The journey has started! It’s sureal getting to write this looking back on a long long haul of preparations. So much is already behind us already with hopefully more of the real stuff ahead : Let the travelling commence!

The first few days on the road are intense. Although we camp out at places where we have been before, travelling with a truck and a car - to our first stop in Le Puy en Velay in France - is quite different. Our car will be parked in that area for the length of our journey while we continue by truck towards the east. Navigating over a wireless adds a new factor, both having our hands on the wheel and trying to read maps and signs. Pictures are here.

With sunny weather ahead our small inside world expands with the big outside. More light in the evening and open doors and windows without freezing our limbs off. Nonetheless the first 4 days in our journey were colder than we ever imagined.
Below freezingpoint at night with a real cold breeze during the day. Only 10 degrees Celsius while we already got used to 15 – 18. The nothern freeze suddenly followed us deep into France! Will we treasure this spell of cold weather in the future?

During the evenings feelings like “This is the real thing” suddenly emerge. We’re doing what we’ve looked out for many many months. It’s quite subtle – no shocking transistion from daily life to a life on the road. Instead a gradual change of behavior, getting into the swing of moving about.

Now we’re in Le Puy en Velay – the start of the GR65 – the weather is simply great and we look forward to several things we got planned here. Another aspect of our journey strikes us, our time here is unmanaged, unplanned. Meaning we don’t know how long we’ll stay here. The feel of that is hard to describe coming from a world were much of our time was planned, time-boxed and littered with deadlines.

So far so good, the journey has started, in a physical as well as mental perspective. Where will it lead us? Who knows? We don’t that’s for sure.
